If all the business establishments in Qatar paid taxes, it would be clear that the economy is not dominated solely by the energy sector. Small shop owners running their business by proxy and accounting for huge remittances, represent a big future opportunity for wealth creation in the country.

Ahmed,* an Indian from the southern state of Kerala, came here to work in a Qatari household as a helper over 25 years ago. On his insistence a few years later, his sponsor allowed him to look for a job elsewhere that would ensure him more wages. With some effort and help from his large community here, Ahmed managed to take up menial work in an AC (air-conditioner) repair and servicing shop.
