Growth in the GCC textile industry

The textile industry is growing fast in the Gulf where some countries are emerging as textile manufacturing and trading centres.



In the MENA region the textile industry plays a vital role in industrial production, especially in North African countries like Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco, where the textile sector is the largest employer of the industrial workforce with 40 percent. According to the Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC) data, there were 758 factories in textile, clothing and leather products across the GCC in 2013, which makes for 4.8 percent of the total number of factories, with an average growth of 0.3 percent. Investments in the textile industry in the region were around USD 2.6 billion (0.7 percent of the total investments) with an average growth rate of 6.4 percent, and there were around 92.1 thousand workers employed (6.7 percent of the overall workforce).
